Snowspring Credit, a small-business funding service in Lima, Ohio, offers a construction equipment financing calculator: enter the price, down payment, rate and term to see the monthly payment and total paid. The notes explain heavy equipment financing terms, how to read the results and the calculator's limits. Partners set actual rates and terms.
Heavy Equipment Financing Terms: What Lima, OH Owners Should Know
- Price: the machine's cost on the quote, including attachments you are buying with it.
- Down payment: cash or trade-in value applied at purchase.
- Rate: the annual rate stated on a partner's quote; the calculator does not supply one.
- Term: the number of monthly payments.
- Balloon or residual: a final payment some agreements include; this calculator assumes none.
Heavy equipment agreements can be loans or leases. A lease may have a purchase option at the end; the calculator treats every input as a loan.
Reading Construction Equipment Financing Calculator Results for a Lima, OH Business
Illustration only, invented figures: a $145,000 excavator with $14,500 down leaves $130,500 financed (our arithmetic). At an invented 8.5% annual rate over 60 months, the payment is about $2,677 a month and the total paid about $160,644 in this invented example. In this invented example, over 72 months the payment drops to about $2,320 but the total rises to about $167,046.
Stretching the term shrinks each payment while the total paid grows. Read both numbers, and set the payment against the work the machine will bring in.
Down Payment, Trade-In and the Amount Financed
The amount financed is the price, plus any tax, delivery or attachments you choose to finance, minus the down payment and any trade-in credit. A trade-in machine with a loan still on it reduces the credit by the payoff amount. Enter the net figure as the price and the cash down as the down payment, and the result shows the payment on what is actually financed.
Ask the dealer for the trade-in value and the payoff figure in writing before you run the numbers.
A Worked Comparison: New Skid Steer or Used One
Illustration only, invented figures: a new skid steer at $68,000 financed over 60 months at an invented 8% annual rate costs about $1,379 a month in this invented example, about $82,728 in total. A used one at $41,000 over 48 months at an invented 10% annual rate costs about $1,040 a month, about $49,914 in total (our arithmetic).
The used machine costs less in total in this invented example, but its remaining hours and repair costs are part of the comparison. Price the repairs a used machine is likely to need, and set the total against the work each machine will do.
Reading the Total Paid Against a Machine's Working Life
A loan that runs longer than the machine's useful working life leaves payments on equipment that no longer earns. Before choosing a term, estimate how many years the machine will work at your hours of use and match the term to that. Partners do the same check when they decide how long a term to offer on older equipment.
If the total paid looks high next to the work the machine will bring in, a shorter term, a larger down payment or a different machine may change the picture.
Limits of the Construction Equipment Financing Calculator
- It does not know any partner's rates, fees or terms.
- It assumes equal monthly payments with no balloon.
- It does not include sales tax, insurance, delivery or installation unless you add them to the price.
- It does not judge whether a business qualifies.
Construction employers in Allen County, OH numbered 181 in 2023 (County Business Patterns); each prices machines on its own records, so treat the result as arithmetic, not an offer.
